Panel: Hear from New Mainframers Sharing their Journeys - Joe Winchester & Robbie Avill, IBM; Jessielaine Punongbayan, Broadcom; Simge Helvaci, IBM
One of the challenges facing the mainframe is to make it familiar and attractive to a generation who are graduating having grown up on non-mainframe computers, such as PCs, Macs, computers running Linux. Information is learned from videos, software is forged in hackathons, open source is prevalent, blogs and forums are used to collaborate and share information. This panel discusses how four new mainframers have navigated this from their personal viewpoint, the stories they share will be their perception coming to the platform, what worked for them, what didn't work, what challenges they faced and overcame, and what their advice and hope for the future is to help de-mistify the mainframe and evolve and grow a healthy and vibrant community of 21st century mainframers.

An Open Source Delivery and Deployment Model for the Security Conscious - Peter Fandel, Rocket Software
The open source software world is about public involvement, easy access, easy contribution, mix and match, etc. with many benefits resulting in faster innovations, higher quality, and lower costs. The mainframe world is about extreme security, trusted sources, high standards for integration testing, the ability to restore to previous states, and so on, resulting in extreme reliability and extreme information security. A goal that mainframe administrators have struggled to attain is to merge these seemingly contradictory worlds and derive all the benefits of each without losing the benefits of the other. This presentation is on how to leverage conda via secure internet channels and air-gapped file channels to achieve this goal.

Beyond the Mainframe Security Features, it is Time to Learn about Open Source Software Security - Javier Perez, IBM
Mainframes are the most secure platforms available, they provide the functionality to build secured mission-critical applications better than anyone. There is also a growing ecosystem of open source software (OSS) for mainframes. Tools, frameworks, and libraries are being increasingly used by development teams. With this new reality, it is very important to educate your developers, managers, and executives about securing code on open source. In this session, you will learn why and how vulnerabilities on OSS exist, how to prevent them, and how to protect your applications and data. You will also learn how to keep up with constant changes in OSS. Vulnerabilities in open source software increase the risks of exploitation, it is critical then to have a plan around visibility at an early stage in the development lifecycle, shift-left, and automate application security.

Keynote: On Ramp to Open DevOps for Mainframe - George DeCandio, Chief Technology Officer, Broadcom Inc, Mainframe Software Division
Many of today’s modern organizations are running on open tooling. They’re enabling automated CI/CD pipelines and utilizing the industry’s best tools and practices to supercharge enterprise-wide development processes. But how does “open” extend to mainframe development? How do you bring legacy tools from the mainframe world to this modern approach to fully leverage the richness of open source tooling? What do you need to adopt an open strategy in your organization, and where do you start?

In this session, you’ll learn about the expanding opportunity for mainframe DevOps, and how to get started. You’ll review how you can integrate with existing DevOps tools like Git and Jenkins, or into existing cross-platform CI/CD pipelines. And you’ll discover how Zowe, OMP’s first project devoted to the mainframe, is opening mainframe system commands, data sets, and source libraries so you can integrate with tools that know nothing about mainframe.

You’ll walk away with a framework for building your own DevOps integrations using Zowe and the IDE of your choice.

Open Source as Common Ground Between the z/OS Enterprise and Everyone Else - Joe Bostian, IBM
As the system of record for much of the world's financial infrastructure, IBM Z and z/OS have evolved according to a different set of rules than most other technology driven service providers. Security, efficiency, and reliability are the most powerful forces driving z/OS development in ways that the open source community still doesn't fully appreciate today. Open source software has brought an unprecedented wave of creativity to software development that could never be achieved by even a large group of private entities selling their own proprietary offerings. As open source solutions mature, they increasingly encounter some of the same forces that z/OS continues to address. The z/OS and the open source communities have strengths that each can benefit from. Learn how this can be accomplished while preserving the characteristics that make each community successful.

Keeping Up with the Times: Adopting Zowe as a Modern Mainframe Developer - Jessielaine Punongbayan & Richelle Anne Craw, Broadcom
How extending Zowe CLI made Mainframe Engineers, Jessielaine Punongbayan and Richelle Anne Craw, more productive. From their beginnings as Application Developers and subsequent experience as Operations Engineers, their move to a DevOps role as part of the Zowe project is a natural progression in their career journey. Knowing what they know now, how could they have used Zowe to improve their lives in their previous roles? Join this session as they show the time-saving benefits of adopting Zowe, specifically via the creation of a Zowe CLI Systems Utilities Plugin. Using what they learned from developing legacy Mainframe applications and performing system administration tasks, extending Zowe CLI was the obvious answer as a way to improve the productivity of teams doing repetitive tasks on the Mainframe even without deep Mainframe knowledge.

An Introduction to the IBM Fully Homomorphic Encryption Toolkit for Linux (on IBM Z and zOS Container Extensions) - Eli Dow & Flavio Bergamaschi, IBM
Invented in IBM Research, Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) is the first and only known technology that allows entirely encrypted data processing not just at rest, or in transit, but also while being operated on by the CPU and in memory. The implications of FHE unlock new cloud potential for even highly regulated industries. In this session, our speakers provide an overview of FHE and business applications and demonstrate how you can begin experimenting easily with a set of open-source FHE toolkits that help enterprise developers weave pervasive security into software source code. The toolkits support Linux for IBM Z as well as z/OS with Container Extensions. We conclude with technical demos shipped with the toolkits. These include Privacy-Preserving Search through a fully encrypted key-value store as well as a fully-encrypted machine learning for credit card fraud detection.

Open Source Tool to Modernize the Build of the z/OS Development, using Jenkins and Git - Jerry Edgington, Western & Southern Financial Group
Polycephaly is intended to be a key technology in expanding access to mainframes. The name comes from the Greek word meaning “a condition of having more than one head,” because the project marries two different development life cycle methodologies, distributed and z/OS. Polycephaly requires minimal z/OS system programming, and provides flexible development paths and options, moving from linear to non-linear development. It removes the need for separate development paths for distributed and z/OS workloads. Developers can develop on any platform, store to Git and Jenkins to deploy. Plus it has all the benefits of the 1000+ Jenkins plugins, The OMP Polycephaly is a set of Groovy scripts, building upon IBM DBB technology, in an effort to jump start and aid conversion to Jenkins and Git

Panel: Observability in Mainframe DevOps - April Hickel, BMC; Julie Bergh; Rocket Software; Jeanne Glass; VirtualZ Computing
DevOps brings together development, operations, and automation, shortening the development lifecycle and improving product quality. Despite mainframe development teams being the first to employ DevOps practices, today when most people think of DevOps, they typically think of distributed platforms.
IBM recently reporting record high growth in mainframe MIPs, the new IBM z15 runs one trillion secure web transactions per day, and increasingly, businesses are integrating the mainframe back into their DevOps lifecycle. But DevOps extends beyond just technology and monitoring extends beyond just gathering log data.

The concept of “Observability” and its strong human element, including organizational culture, is becoming prominent in the DevOps lifecycle.
Observability brings together the people, processes and technologies in the software development lifecycle.

Join Jeanne Glass, Founder and CEO of VirtualZ, as she hosts a discussion with April Hickel, AVP of Product Management at BMC, and Julie Bergh, Worldwide Lead Security Executive with Rocket Software on the importance of Observability in Mainframe DevOps.

Leveraging Open Source and Hybrid Cloud for zOS - A Rube Goldberg Evolution to COTS Value - Jim Porell, Rocket Software
New technologies on the mainframe seem to be all the rage. Attend most user groups and you’ll find out how they work and how they were built. But what can you use them for? How do they return revenue to your business or reduce costs? How do they make your jobs easier?  Here you’ll find some examples that are already underway at a wide variety of businesses to improve their IT environment. And it’s IT environment, not just mainframe. The important aspect is that many of these work on other systems as well as the mainframe. These capabilities are helping to evolve  the mainframe in a consistent way with other platforms. Topic areas that can exploit these technologies include Application Development, Security, System Monitoring, Data Access and Analytics.
